    Abstract:

    With the development of urbanization, the greater number of cities are built near mountains or valleys. Various characteristics of mountainvalley breezes are shown in different places due to geographical locations and meteorological conditions. Mountainvalley breezes play an important role in local wind regimes and climatic features, and are also related to the evolution of inversion and pollutant concentration. Based on the observation analysis, theory and numerical simulation, the main methods of studying mountainvalley breezes, this study focuses on the achievements of mountainvalley breeze researches in China. The interactions with other mesoscale circulations (landsea breeze, landlake breeze, urban heat island, vegetation breeze, glacier wind circulation) are discussed. Impacts of mountain circulation including mountainvalley breeze on atmospheric pollution are also reviewed. At last, the paper concludes with an outline of mountainvalley breeze researches in China and rises some open questions that need to be further studied and discussed.
